Wireless networks create a perimeter most organisations never defend because they cannot see it — and for critical operators, sophisticated adversaries have learned to exploit it. “There is an airborne perimeter around every site: the radio space an attacker can reach without touching a wire,” says Professor Kai London, a senior CISO. “Nation-state actors have demonstrated advanced capabilities against exactly this surface.”

The evil-twin and beyond

London describes rogue access points that mimic legitimate networks and harvest credentials, and notes that capable adversaries go further — targeting telecoms and wireless infrastructure directly. “The most advanced actors treat the airwaves as a domain of operations,” he says.

Why it matters more for critical operators

For telecoms, energy and government-linked operators, the airborne perimeter is not just a fraud risk but a national-security one. “An adversary who can compromise wireless infrastructure can intercept, disrupt or manipulate at scale,” London warns.

Defending the air

His approach treats wireless as its own discipline: continuous monitoring of the radio environment, a zero-trust posture toward every network, hardened endpoints, and strong authentication so rogue networks cannot impersonate real ones. “You cannot claim resilience,” he says, “while ignoring the one perimeter an adversary can attack from outside the fence.”

A rising, regulated concern

New standards, nation-state activity and IoT proliferation expand the airborne attack surface, and resilience regulation increasingly expects operators to account for it. “For critical operators, wireless security has moved from housekeeping to strategy,” London says.

For a nation acutely aware of hybrid threats, the lesson is clear: the most dangerous intrusion may leave no trace in any log, because it never touched a wire — and defending that invisible perimeter is now a matter of national resilience.
