Post-Quantum Cryptography and the Future of Secure Communications: Professor Kai London Explains

The confidentiality of communications rests on cryptography — and that cryptography faces an eventual reckoning with quantum computing. For telecoms and secure-communications providers, Professor Kai London, a senior CISO, argues preparation must begin now. “Communications that must stay confidential for years are already exposed to the harvest-now-decrypt-later threat,” he says.
“Adversaries capture encrypted traffic today to decrypt it once quantum computers mature. For anything that must remain secret over time, the clock has already started.”
Why communications are especially exposed
London notes that intercepted communications have long shelf lives — diplomatic, commercial and personal data that remains sensitive for years. “If it must stay confidential into the next decade, it is already at risk,” he says.

Concrete post-quantum algorithms have been standardised. “We have moved from a warning to a specification,” London says. “Providers can begin migrating with real algorithms rather than waiting.”
A migration roadmap
Discover where cryptography is used across the network; prioritise long-lived, high-value confidentiality; demand post-quantum roadmaps from equipment vendors; pilot hybrid classical/post-quantum schemes; and build crypto-agility so future changes are seamless. “For a network, agility is everything,” he says. “You will change algorithms more than once.”
Plan, not panic
“No one should rip out systems this quarter,” London stresses, “but every provider should know where its cryptography lives and have a phased plan.” Regulators and security-conscious customers will increasingly expect it.
For a sector whose entire value rests on trustworthy communication, London's counsel is to treat the quantum transition as a strategic programme — started early and governed with the seriousness the confidentiality of a nation's communications deserves.
