Identity Security for Hyperconnected Networks: Professor Kai London on the New Perimeter

In hyperconnected networks — where people, devices, applications and services authenticate constantly — identity has become the true perimeter. “The decisive breach almost always begins with a login that should have been stopped,” says Professor Kai London, a senior CISO. “In a network with millions of identities, human and machine, getting identity right is the highest-leverage thing you can do.”

The scale of the challenge
London highlights the sheer number and diversity of identities in modern networks — subscribers, employees, partners, devices, services and now AI agents. “Each is a potential entry point,” he says. “And the machine identities usually outnumber the human ones many times over.”
Verify and limit
Strong, phishing-resistant authentication and context-aware access for anything that matters; least privilege and segmentation so a single compromise cannot spread. “Decide in advance how far any one identity can reach,” he advises.
Detect and prove
Because malicious logins look legitimate, monitor behaviour after authentication; and maintain the evidence, increasingly demanded by regulators, that access is controlled. “The signal is in what an identity does, not just how it logs in,” London says.
Machines and AI agents
The fastest-growing and worst-controlled identities are non-human. “Every service account and AI agent needs an identity, least privilege, monitoring and a kill-switch,” London warns. “They are logins too — faster and at greater scale.”
For operators of hyperconnected networks, London's message is that identity is the new perimeter, and mastering it — for machines as rigorously as for people — is now the foundation of resilience.
